Erik Satie
Composer

Ericsatie.jpg

Erik Satie (1866–1925) was a French composer and pianist known for his eccentric and innovative approach to music. A key figure in early 20th-century music, Satie's work broke away from Romanticism and traditional classical forms. His compositions, including Gymnopédies (1888) and Gnossiennes (1890), are characterized by simple, repetitive melodies and unconventional harmonies, creating a dreamlike, meditative atmosphere. Satie was also known for his quirky personality and unconventional ideas, influencing avant-garde movements like Surrealism and Dadaism. His use of humour, minimalism, and non-traditional notation marked him as a precursor to later experimental music.

Of Sound Minds foregrounds the act of listening, including the importance of listening, learning and unlearning in the practice of Reconciliation. We are grateful to gather on the unceded, traditional and ancestral territories of the SENĆOŦEN and HUL’Q’UMI’NUM speaking peoples.
